Renewable gas is typically “low BTU” gas with a heat rate between 485 and 850 BTU/CF. The gas will contain methane but the water content lowers the heat content below that of natural gas. Though pipeline methane gas is the most abundant source of combustible gas, it is not the most “green friendly” or renewable. One of the advantages of micro turbines over other combustible generators is their ability to cycle on a wide range of fuel types and heat content. Preon is a turnkey Energy Integrator for micro turbine-based CHP plants fueled renewable gases – as such, deals with the unique requirements for gas conditioning for each specific fuel source. Biogas typically refers to a gas produced by the biological breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Biogas originates from biogenic material and is a type of biofuel. One type of biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable materials such as biomass, manure, sewage, municipal waste, green waste and energy crops. This type of biogas comprises primarily methane and carbon dioxide. The other principal type of biogas is wood gas which is created by gasification of wood or other biomass. This type of biogas is comprised primarily of nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide, with trace amounts of methane. The gases methane, hydrogen and carbon monoxide can be combusted or oxidized with oxygen. Air contains 21 percent oxygen. This energy release allows biogas to be used as a fuel. Biogas can be used as a low-cost fuel in any country for any heating purpose, such as cooking. It can also be used in modern waste management facilities where it can be used to run any type of heat engine, to generate either mechanical or electrical power. Preon also promotes the Waste Gasification System which uses the sublimation of gas: Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is heated until enough energy utilized to sustain the gassing/heating process. The net effect is that 200 tons of MSW can provide for 5 MW of continuous electric power.

Digester: Muncipal Waste Water Treatment Plants are a source of sludge that can be processed to liberate combustible methane. The waste heat of the micro turbine is used to heat the “brew” to maximize the gassing process. Specific attention must be provided in the removal of siloxenes (grit from toothpaste, etc) and other materials. In some instances, the BTU density and pressure of the bio gas must be boosted also. Preon subcontracts to gas conditioning manufacturers to provide a turnkey solution. Most WWPT CHP Plants are designed by specifying engineers. Preon works closely with specifying engineers in the design and layout of CHP Plants.

Landfill: As landfill garbage decomposes, methane gas is naturally created. Traditionally, this bio gas was flared. However, as conditioning and combustion-generator technology advanced, many of these landfills realized the wisdom and environmental responsibility of converting the waste/renewable gas into useable electric. Gas from landfills must be cleaned by gas conditioners to remove siloxenes and sulfur. Preon is working with the leading landfill operator to assess the viability of converting over 1,200 landfills to renewable electricity generators. The waste heat from these micro turbines can be utilized by Organic Rankin Cycle (ORC) to generate additional “free/green” electricity.
